Pendulum Putting, What Are The Benefits (Video) - by Pete Styles

Well firstly let’s define a pendulum putting stroke. Pendulum putting stroke works on the idea like a grandfather clock that it just rocks backwards and forwards, and backwards and forwards with your putting stroke taking the same amount of time to complete whether it’s a long putting stroke arch, or a short putting stroke arch. Therefore if I have a pendulum putting stroke, all I need to do to change the speed at which I hit the golf ball is change the length at which I make my stroke. So if I make a long pendulum back and through, the ball goes further, if I make a short pendulum back and through the ball goes a shorter distance. So grandfather clock, tick tock, tick tock or tick tock tick tock. The time it takes to go from one side to other is exactly the same way that is long or short. So pendulum putting stroke when I’m playing golf I can line up to my putt, I can consider how far back and how far through do I think I want to make my stroke.

Therefore I can control my pace of putts better. Now consider this, I’m not doing this from here with my wrists. The pendulum putting stroke very much comes from right to the stuff of my top of my sternum or by my throat, and rocking backwards and forwards with my shoulders. That’s the top of the grandfather clock. It’s not that bit that’s wobbling backwards and forwards. So the pendulum comes back and through all the way from the top, very little leg action, very little hip action, and certainly no head moving. So it’s rocking backwards and forwards from the shoulders. Long putting strokes have long roll for long stroke and short roll for a short stroke. You could spend some time practicing your putting either on some flat carpet at home or on the putting green before your next round of golf, and just consider that if you want to change the length of your putt you change the length of your stroke. The feeling is not hitting it harder, or hitting it softer, but it’s making it longer or making it shorter with your stroke. And that’s how you can best utilize the pendulum putting stroke to hit better putts.
