The benefit of a downswing squat is basically as you do a down squat it actually pulls the power and the body into the ball and a lot of today’s tall players are actually using this sort of technique. One of the perfect examples was Sam Snead in his day. He would always, he would swing the club back and literally kind of almost drop himself into this position. It’s a quite strong position.

It takes a lot of finessing and timing to actually create this and for those people who are kind of contemplating this, it’s a case of doing nothing different in the set up other than feeling as if you’ve kind of just sat a little bit in sort of like a chair and from this position here, as you get to the top of the backswing, just kind of feel yourself, just kind of as if you’re sitting down, just sitting down ever so slightly and as you can see, there is such a fine line between just getting it to perfection and maybe dropping your body just a fraction too much and then you catch the ground behind the ball, it’s a very fine line, but it’s a very powerful one because if you can get it right from here and just drop into that position, you can see, look at the power, look at the weight and from here it can really get some extra benefit, lots more power through the ball.

That is what a lot of the top pros are playing, but this is something that I just would not recommend for any senior golfer out there unless, of course, you’re playing something like a three handicap or better, so for the guys who want to have a go, you’ve got the instruction there, but my advice for the senior golfer, do not attempt this.
