Huge number of golfers will come into a golf lesson and they sit down and say, “Pete I am coming over the top,” some of that mates have told them they are doing it, their playing partners have told them they are doing it, they have maybe even put a video camera where my video camera is and they have seen themselves coming over the top. So let’s just fully understand what that terminology means.
From a good address position as the club comes back we would like to see the club come back through some really good key checkpoint positions to get to a good position. And a lot of golfers actually do that quite well; they can see that in the mirror they can build that position up. They bring the club to the top nicely, then the mistake happens, then they come over the top, the right shoulder, the right hand gets involved a bit too soon, the club gets out in front of them, from there they drag the club back across the golf ball because of course from here, you can’t swing out to the right, you have to come back across the golf ball. So from that position you generally are going to hit some quite high spinning shots, some curvy from left to right shots and generally not that far a golf shots. So if I make that swing now coming round and then over the top, we see a ball that curves very violently from left to right and really slice is off down that right hand side. And it doesn’t matter how hard I hit that shot, it’s generally going to have that shape and it’s generally going to not go as far as I would want it to go.
So if you can understand what an over the top position is and you can actually see that happening in your swing either using a mirror or a video camera then hopefully you can go about starting to put that over the top swing right.
