The Ideal Impact In Golf Chipping (Video) - by Peter Finch

The impact position with golf chipping is absolutely crucial if whether your shot will be successful or it will not. One of the key fundamentals that a lot of people forget when trying to hit these shots successfully is making sure that their setup is absolutely banged on for the shot that they want to try and play. For example, with the shot that I’m about to hit, I want to hit a low checking shot, so I want the ball to take off quite low, I want it to bounce and then grab and then have a little bit of a release out to the halt.

So, what I need to try in this shot is that my hands are moving ahead of the ball, so I’m striking the ball first and then the turf but also my angle of attack is slightly steeper than it normally would be. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to get this ball set up opposite of my back toe. I want to get my feet open slightly to the target. I’m going to get my hands leaning ahead and then I’m going to put a little bit of weight on my front foot. Now you can see here that my hands are long, long way ahead of the ball. And what I want to do is move my shoulders back and through and at the point of impact have my hands ahead in exactly the same position as they were at address. And this is why chipping setup and pitching setup is very, very important. You can preset a lot of the positions that you want to see at impact before you even start to take the club away. And that is how you can preset impact and hopefully preset a little bit more of a successful shot. So, I’m going to pull that ball back. I’m going to pull my hands ahead, my weight forward, I’m going to move my shoulders back and through and just try to return the hands in that shaft angle into exactly the same position as it was at address. And if I can do that, I can guarantee you much more successful hit rate on those good strikes.
