The timing is always an interesting conversation in the game of golf because golf is a very target orientated sport. We're not trying to aim for a goal or a basket or anything like that we're trying to aim for the hole. So each time we stand on the tee ground ultimately our target at the end of the hole is the hole where the flag is.

Having said that I've quite often played golf holes where I haven't actually aimed for my intended target the hole at the end. I haven't aimed at the hole unless I'm on my very final shots and if that's a par 5 it might only be my 5th shot that actually aims to the hole. Everything else before that aims sometimes not even close to where the hole is and that sounds daft because all the golfers would stand on the tee where the flag is there is going to aim at it and every shot they hit down the hole will be aiming for the flag.
