If we’ve established that we really need to keep a really relaxed hold and really relaxed arm position, really relaxed shoulder position during the swing, it’s quite important we start off with the fundamental area where most golfers create tension in the first place which is actually the grip. And the grip will -- the wrong grip pressure will manifest itself in forearm pressure and shoulder pressure. So if we can work on keeping that light relaxed grip than we’ve got a really good chance of staying relaxed thought the whole swing.

So when you’re establishing the grip, a couple of things that give you the wrong grip pressure particularly too tight grip pressure would actually be the wrong grip fundamentals. If your hands are not in the right place when you start on the gold club, you’ll often find the golf root over gripping the club to compensate for that. So if you grip and you’re in a bad position maybe your hands too high on the club, or your fingers are inter-linked together, the hands will often just go for the death grip squeeze in the club as tightly as they possibly can to try and establish some degree of control on the club. So that’s work initially on having good fundamental grip positions. There’re plenty of videos on this site on how to get the grip correct. So I’m going to leave that to one side for now. But make sure you’ve got good fundamental positions with your grip, then keep that grip pressure quite relaxed. Then during the swing I want you to make sure that you’re really sort of stay within yourself and you’re not trying over hit it. So when we establish ourselves in a good set up to the ball, we’re thinking yes, we’re going to hit this ball hard but we’re not going to try and kill it. We’re not to just snatch the club away and warp down on the back of the ball as fast as we can. Your hands aren’t really responsible for creating lots and lots of power. Your hands are going to apply the power that the body is supplying. So the body supplies it and the hands just apply it. If your hand and your grip pressure get too tight, then you’re going to have problems applying that power that this supplied. One last thing to consider is that: there’s a difference between the death-grip as in holding on to it too much and being too light. Too light a grip pressure could lack any control. So you hold on to it so lightly because you’re scared of creating tension. The top of the club you don’t have control you can’t stop the club here and then as you hit down against the ball you won’t have control. You hit the toe or the heel the club will twist too much. You hit the ground, you’ll almost let go of the club. So that can be a problem. So a nice of three or four out of 10 should work. So 10 would be strangling it, one will be letting it go, three or four out 10 should give you nice control but nice fast hands to generate lots and lots of power.
