One thing which is essential before you go on to the course with this type of shot is practicing it at the driving range. If you don’t have access to a driving range you can practice this on the course as well. But obviously it’s a lot easier to gain the feelings, and to gain the consistency with this type of shot if you have time to practice first of all. Now, the easiest way to practice is at a golf course is using an alternative shot drill. Now alternative shots drill is very, very simple, it’s hitting one type of swing, and then switching over to another. In this particular example, all you need to be doing is switching over between your full swing, and then the knock-down shot. If you can switch it around and go to different targets as well it will be very, very useful.

So I’m just going to pull a couple of balls across here, and I’m going to take aim a couple of targets on opposite sides of the driving range. So I have a flight quite a long way off to the right-hand side here, and I am going to hit a nice full shot. So getting set up, the stance just outside shoulder width apart, nice even weight distribution, full backswing turn back and through, and then moving through. So that’s what I’d class as a nice full shot technique. Now what I’m going to do is I’m going to switch over to the knock-down shot, but I’m going to change my target so I’m going to switch over to something a little bit further on to the left-hand side of the driving range and then go through the difference in the setup. So our feet are going to be slightly open, my shoulders are going to be nice and square, my weight is going to go a little bit further forward, my stance slightly narrower, I’m going to keep my sternum positioned just in front of the ball, back and through, three-quarter swing, and then just try and get to that target on the left-hand side of the driving range. Now what this will do as a golfer, when you’re practicing it will break up your mentality that you will get into, and a lot of people do this on a driving range of just hitting ball after ball, after ball. The whole point of a knock-down shot is that you can feel the differences between that and a full swing. So if you are going to practice it please use this drill and see how you get on.
