The reason that many people sway away from the ball within the backswing is the feeling that they’re starting to generate much more power and in many respects this does make sense. If you think of most sports you will require weight transfer off to the right hand side, off to the back foot before pushing through to the front foot. If you think about it in tennis, it’s exactly the same. Transferring back and then moving through. Baseball, back and then moving through. Boxing, back and then through. It’s a constant in all hitting sports. But one thing you do not see with any of those is a massive movement off to the right hand side and then a massive movement through.

Weight transfer is important and it should move onto the back foot during the backswing and transfer through to the front foot on the through swing. But the sources of power that will give you the most consistency in delivering a punch, in delivering club head speed into the shot is using body rotations rather than sways. Movements which travel from side to side will develop and will give power. Movements that have a slight weight transfer side to side but develop rotational aspects will give you more power a 100 percent of the time. So we need to get away from the idea that having a sway away to the right hand side is allowing you to build the power to move through. Moving off to the right without any rotations and rotations will be limited the more you sway away will not give you consistent sources of power. You will develop much more energy by keeping the head nice and steady, turning away with the shoulders and then moving through with the hips. So if you’re looking for sources of power, do not sway, use rotation. Use the drills that we spoke about here as well and help deliver that more consistent power to the ball as you hit.
