Stop your Backswing Sway for More Power - Senior Golf Tip (Video) - by Dean Butler

Okay, so, we’re going to talk about the sway. If you’re actually having a sway of the golf ball, you’re actually losing quite a lot of power. If you sway off the ball, a sway is basically where we set up to the ball and the legs literally go like this so there is no sort of turn, it’s just literally the body is moving laterally, just moving this way and then back to the ball. So, because it’s just going backwards and forwards, it’s just more like a hands and arms shot, there’s no real power, there’s no coil, there’s no energy, so, if you sway off that ball there’s no power. Yes, you might hit the ball fairly straight, but you’re going to lose tremendous distance.

So, what I want to do is I want to explain the best sort of movement for actually getting some power into the actual swing. The key, again, from here is to set up and move this left knee and concentrate on turning your hips. Remember what we just did, we just went and we swayed off the ball. When we swayed off the ball, imagine trying to get back to the ball, how difficult that must be. The timing is going to be out. You’re certainly not going to get a wonderful strike, so when you’re over this ball, concentrate on turning this left knee and turn the hips, so if I move my knee, you can see straight away I can’t straighten the left knee, but by the left knee moving and the hips turning, I’ve now come round on a much more rounded sort of swing plane, I’m coming round the body more, so from this angle here if I move my left knee and turn my hips, all of a sudden you can see, I’ve come more around my body, I’ve got a nice shoulder turn and from here you’ve got lots of power. There is a coil, a golf swing is a coil, you wind yourself up, you resist with this right leg and from here we drive down and through, so that’s the key to getting extra power. Remember, a sway is a no-no when trying to find power.
