How can I stop coming over the top during the golf swing? Now coming over the top is a very common fault you see with countless amateurs across the world. Now it actually means from the top of the swing, the hands coming away from the body and cutting across the target line. So it comes over the top of the target line, cuts across, and it produces a slice, a pull or a pull hook. Now to actually stop coming over the top of the ball isn’t an easy thing to do, but there’s a great way you can actually start improving straight away. Now the reason most people come over the top from the top of the swing, is that they throw the hands. So from the top of the swing, the hands are the first thing to move and that throws them away from the body and causes the club to cut across the line. A great way you can actually stop this happening, is from the top of the swing start moving the hips first. If hips start moving first at the top of the swing, the hands will fall into a much better position. So just try and concentrate on turning to the top of the swing, and then moving the hips first. If the hips move first the hands will drop into a much better position.
One thing you see with a lot of golfers and a big mistake which they make is to stop the over-the-top movement, is they actually start to try and manipulate the hands first and not the hips. So they’ll get to the top of the swing, and then just try and move the hands down. But with no body rotation, that won’t solve the problem and it could also cause some other bad shots. So from the top of the swing, just focus on getting the hips turning first and then just allowing the hands to drop into place. And if you can get the hips moving first, then the hands will drop into a nice little slope and everything should flow through the ball in a nice motion. But give it a go, turn the hips, let the hands drop, don’t try and control the downswing with the hands. Use the hips as the first thing to move from the top of the swing.
