Here’s another really good exercise to help you with the one piece, low and slow takeaway. I’m going to setup to the golf ball as normal but this time I’m actually going to put the club head on the wrong side of the golf ball, so not quite as normal maybe. I’m going to bring the club to this side of the ball. Then during the backswing, we want to be able to roll that ball away and push it back in your backstroke. Now the ideal thing here would be to feel like the club and the ball are in contact for quite a long time.
It’s not necessarily that you’re hitting the ball, you’re more pushing it away from you. So we’re going to try and keep the club head on the ball and push it back for as long as possible, because if I was to lift the club straight up, I would not have the club touching the ball for very long. So I really want to get the sense that I’m going to slide my club back along the ground before I let the ball go and then go ahead and complete my swing.
Another word of warning here is it’s not a case of how far back can you hit it, because if you are swinging back quickly, the ball would go a long way backwards but that would be the wrong motion that’s manipulated that. So we’re not trying to make it go a long way that way, we’re just trying to make contact with it for a long time. So a lot of contact but not much distance on the ball would be ideal. So we can get the feeling now of pushing that away and then hitting down on the golf ball.
And if you’re so inclined you could actually put two balls there, one in front and one behind the club and then we would push the back one away with a low slow takeaway and then hit the first one. That might feel complicated enough you know. Golf is a difficult game with one ball, never mind with two. But utilizing that drill and focusing on that low slow takeaway will really encourage you to stop picking the golf club up too quickly with your hands and your arms. So the low slow takeaway drill, push the ball back before you hit this one. Don’t hit this a long way but also don’t lift the club straight over the top of it. Practice that low slow takeaway drill and improve your golf.
