Where should the club be pointed at the top of the backswing? Now when the club reaches the top of the backswing it’s very hard to actually tell in what position it is, especially when you’re playing because all your focus will be down at the ball and you won’t be able to see where the club is in this position. There are a couple of good positions and a couple of bad positions though you can get into. If you are looking down at the ball and you get to the top of the backswing and the club points off towards the right this is called across the line, and will normally result in a bit of a reroute coming down and a bit of a cut across the ball.
You could also get into a laid off position where the club points off in this direction, the opposite of across the line and this one normally leads to a drop on the inside and a bit of a hook shot. Ideally you want to be precisely in the middle, so you want to get to the top and you want that club to be pointing down towards the target. If you can get it pointing down towards the target it’s got a much better chance to actually fall into the correct position coming down and to hit straight shots.
So at the top of the backswing you want it pointing down where your body is aiming, down towards parallel lines of the target as you come down that will give you a chance to drop it in. Not only do you want it pointing down straight to the where you want it to go you also want it pretty much parallel to the ground. If you can get it parallel to the ground at this point it will mean that the wrists have sat quite nicely and you should be able to deliver a decent kind of punch in a decent angle of attack into the ball.
Now to practice this you can use a mirror or you can use a video camera or you can just get the feeling there at the top, you are just using the club and getting it pointed down the target. But it isn’t an easy position check without an aid of a mirror, a video camera, or a friend. But after you’ve had a bit of a practice, swing the club up, try and get it pointing down towards the target, and you should be able to drop the club into a lovely position as you come into impact. But give it a go and see how you get it.
