So what sort of shot would be caused by having a weak grip? Well you might be thinking well I am not sure what a weak grip is, so let me show you what one is. A weak grip is when you put your left hand on the club and you basically put your hand on the grip of which too much in the palm, so if I put it in the palm – so if you look from behind instead of being in the fingers I put it into the palm and that allows the hand then to sit very much underneath the grip so it's now sat to the left. This is a very, very weak grip because the left hand is now too far to the left my right hand has got too much room now to sit on, so it's now going to sit on top of that area that I have created. So now my hands are too much to the left, and when the hands are too much to the left you will notice that the V between my thumb and my forefinger on both hands are actually aiming well over to the left shoulder. So these are good indicators if you are looking into a mirror or you’ve actually got a video camera or a phone filming you, to actually pinpoint what a weak grip is.
So it's too much under and the right hand over the top and when you put those hands into that position watch what happens to my shoulders. First of all where we should be there is the shoulders running nice and parallel to my feet and to my ball the target line, but when I put my left hand under and my right hand over watch my shoulders. All over a sudden you can't see my left shoulder, my left shoulder has moved back out to the way because of the way my hands are but what this is going to create is a swing that’s going to now follow the direction of my shoulders, which is to left. So straight away my club will then go, moving out away from my body which is outside the line and then it follow where my shoulders were when they first started which is then inside and as that clip comes across the ball you can imagine that you are going to hit the left side of the ball.
As you hit the left side of the ball, this ball will then start to rotate from the left to the right hand side and that shot is a slice. So a very, very tricky shot for a right handed golfer a slice moving from the left to right apart from the obvious factors where the ball finishes it loses tremendous distance as the ball starts to rotate slightly back against you. So a weak grip left hand under, right hand over the top causes the shoulders to be in what we call an open position which means that aiming to the left and that creates a swing which goes out to in and by coming across the ball the ball will start swinging left and to the right. So there you have it a weak grip causes a slice left to right.
