Should I grip tighter and try harder to play better golf shots? Well the simple answer to this is no, absolutely not. You need to be nice and relaxed when you play your golf shots, so really important that when you are holding the golf club, you’re holding it rather than squeezing it tight. So let’s just look at that first, if we set up to play the golf shot, the pressure you should feel in your hands, if you squeeze it tightly you should and we call that a ten, now just drop it to half of that, which is a five and ideally the pressure is a full. So that’s the pressure that you want to play with, you don’t want to start squeezing tighter, because as you squeeze tighter, the muscles in your fore arms actually start to work and when your muscles work they contract and become much shorter. So effectively you’re pulling the club head up away from the ground. And it’s the main reason that you’ll either; completely miss the ball and have an air shot or you’ll just strike at the top of the ball.

So if you want to hit a better shot, you need to make sure that your grip pressure is nice and relaxed and certainly not tight. Okay second issue here is should I try harder? When we’re playing golf, if you start to try, you do grip tight, but also when you down swing you become very quick, you’ll be trying to get the club down to the ball as quickly as possible and in doing that your tempo will really increase, so you’ll jerk the club back and then swing down and then you’ll lose your rhythm and your tempo. Now golf is really important with golf that your tempo is very good and very consistent, if you start swinging too quickly, and trying too hard, and full swing the shots, you’ll hit really bad golf shots. You’ve got to learn to let the shot happen rather than forcing it to happen. So what we want to do here for tempo, this is really, really nice drill, if you hit four different shots, all with the same club, hit one shot with 100% tempo. Now hit the next golf shot with 75% tempo. So that’s a little bit easier and you will be amazed to see that the golf ball flies just as far as when it does with 100% tempo. That’s because just swinging that little bit easier and letting the golf shot happen, it makes it a lot easier for you to control the golf ball being struck from the centre of the club vice, the sweet spot. And when it’s struck from the center, you’re going to increase your accuracy and also increase the distance that you hit. If you’re swinging the club too hard, you start getting off center hits, the ball starts becoming less accurate and being sprayed around more and also you lose distance, because you are not hitting from the centre. So if you want to improve your golf swing, rather than tightening your grip pressure up and trying really hard, where it can be more relaxed and having a 75% tempo, 75% of the speed that you’re capable of and you’ll become a lot more consistent and lower your golf scores.
