So what do people call the engine room for their golf club? Well, it’s the shaft. The most important part of the golf club is not the grip, it’s not the head, it’s the shaft that basically connects the two things together. The shaft is the most vital part of every set of golf clubs. If you got the wrong shaft, you are not going to play to the best of your ability. What does the shaft do? The shaft basically allows us to swing the club back and get into a position where this powers the head into that ball. So it’s we are going to get position, we are going to get distance, we are going to get trajectory; it’s all about the shaft because when you swing that club down, the shaft doesn’t stay straight, it actually bends and it actually bends that way, moving back and also on the way down. So if I could do it on my hands, what are you going to do when you swing an average club at a speed of say 70 miles per hour?

If you are finding yourself with a set of golf clubs, and you find yourself hitting the ball down the left hand side too much with a bit of a curve on it, there’s a possibility that you’ve got a shaft that is a little bit too flexible for you. So in golf we have basically, typically regular and stiff. And then we have senior, which is for senior guys in the middle, yeah, so senior, regular, stiff, extra stiff, ladies, so there’s lots of different shafts. It’s very, very important to get the right one. If the shaft is too weakly, so it’s flexible, what is going to tend to happen is that that club face will tend to come in, it will tend to come in here close, it will hit the ball down that left hand side. And if you find yourself with a shaft that’s a little bit too stiff for you, so it’s not really doing anything, I’ll bet you pound to a penny, you are hitting the ball down that right hand side. And it’ll be more probably a bit of a push. So the shaft is the most important element of the golf club. It is the engine room; it is the driving force to getting that club into that ball correctly. So remember, I would say to you, if you haven’t already been to see a golf pro, go along and see him and say, “Right, can you just check my shafts for me?” Because you could have a great swing and you could actually have something that is nice and repetitive. But if that shaft is working too fast or too slow, that’s going to result in the balls going one way or the other way. So the engine room is the shaft and all I can say to you is it’s the most important part of your golf equipment. Don’t just buy a set of golf clubs off the rack, go and see a professional and see which shaft flex is right for you.
