Why Create Lag In The Golf Swing (Video) - by Peter Finch

Why create lag in the golf swing in the first place? Why is it important? Why is it essential to have if you want to produce a long golf shot? The answer is all about club head speed. The lag or the maintaining of the wrist angles which is -- it’s probably more of the technical way to kind of describe it is as those wrists are maintained, as that lag is maintained, as that cocking is maintained throughout the downswing, which ever words you want to use. As you move down into the point of impact, this is old stored energy. This is a lever which is created between the arms, between the hands and between the club head. And as that lever is extended, that's where swing speed is produced. The longer the lag is maintained throughout the downswing, the faster that lag has to unwind, the faster those wrists have to unhinge to strike the ball successfully.

That’s why you see the long drive champs, the guys who hit it the furthest as they are coming down into impact their wrists are still lagged at about this point here. And it’s very, very hard to actually get the club face square and to hit a successful shot. But it does produce masses of club head speed. So the reason that we need to maintain lag is to produce that amount of club head speed at the point of impact. It’s also important for iron shots especially if you want to hit the ball first and then the turf. Because if that lag is maintained, as those wrists continue to hinge throughout the downswing. It gets the hands into a position where they're slightly ahead of the ball. That means that the club head will be contacting the ball after the hand. That the shaft will be leaning forwards, and it will allow you to hit the ball first and the turf contact. Here the driver is slightly different because the ball position isn't much further forward. And that club will want to bottom out before impact. So it's all about speed and producing consistent strikes with the irons. It is important and it is something that you will need to work on within your game.
