What is flat golf swing and how could I correct it? Now a flat golf swing denotes the movements of the club around the body when it gets a little bit low. So it comes around the body a little bit too much and the actual club doesn’t lift up onto a correct plane.

Now a flatter backswing is a bit of a problem because it can cause a couple of things. If it’s too flat, you can come a little bit to much on the inside of the ball, or if it’s too flat, you could also actually swing over the top and cut across. So with a straight shot from a flat swing, the club needs to come very aggressively from the inside, square up which requires quite a lot of hand rotation through impact and then carry on to rotate through the impact area. So a flat golf swing can cause a number of problems and it doesn’t actually give the benefits that you should be getting from a normal kind of swing play. So to correct it, kind of a strange feeling if you’re swinging into this position is to actually ensure that the hands are high enough at the top of the swing; it will almost feel if you do have a flat swing plane that your hands are almost above your head when you try and correct it. But it’s pushing through with the strange feeling and just ensuring that they’re up there. Now one of the easiest ways to do it when you’re practicing is just to turn and try and get the feeling that your hands are above your head. And if you feel that your hands are above your head more often than not, the actual swing plane would be about correct. If you feel that the hands are dipping quite low, then you’ve gone back into a flat swing play. Just exaggerate it and get those hands lifting a lot higher above your head. But just to begin with a real exaggeration, push that club straight back and then just get those hands lifting much, much higher in the backswing. If you can get that those hands lifting higher in the backswing, it will just allow the club to drop onto a much better path into impact and you won’t have to square the club face up so aggressively through the impact area. Now what a lot of people mistake a flat swing for is the opposite which is an upright plane. You can be too flat, but you can also be too upright. To have a perfect plane you need to be just in the middle with those hands above that left shoulder and your left arm pretty much across the shoulder line. So don’t mistake the two, get yourself on video, try and understand if you have a flat swing plane and then try and get your hands a lot higher at the top of the backswing, it will allow you to come into impact a lot better and hopefully cause a few more straighter shots.
