Stop Pulling The Golf Ball - Don't Lean Back (Video) - by Pete Styles

In this section we’re going to look at pulling the golf ball and how leaning back during your stroke can create the pulled shot. So two considerations first is what is a pull and what do we mean by leaning back? Well a pull shot is a golf ball that will fly left of its intended target for the right-handed golfer. So if my intended target is the red flag out here on the range, if the ball is going left of that in a relatively straight line so a big out to the right and curve back in, that’s not classified really as a pull. A pull is more sort of dead left, straight left. So it’s setting up nicely and then the ball just disappears straight down the left hand side. That will be classified as the pull shot.

So you got to be careful if you understand that what a pull is, whether you know you’re hitting it or you’re not hitting it. This section might be for you if you are hitting a pull. We also got to consider this idea of leaning back. Now by leaning back I don’t strictly mean leaning back this way, it’s more leaning back this way during the shot. So it’s setting up nicely, bodyweight 50/50, leaning back this way is going to cause the pull shot. So leaning back can create a pull and the issue of the pull is it goes straight down the left hand side, sometimes into difficulty and trouble. And it also generally goes quite a long way. The reason why it goes a long way is it has a bit less loft and has a bit more direction to it. It doesn’t go up into the air like a block or a fade might do. It’s more so straight down the left hand side. Sometimes the club face will be aiming to the left therefore has less loft. So many times so it looks more like my 7 iron, therefore it goes its 7 iron distance and it misses the green to the left and goes a bit further with a bit of extra roll. See there are all the things you got to be careful of if you’re pulling the golf ball and if you are pulling the golf ball, hopefully these series of videos next will help you to stop and understand what that pull is and how you stop hitting it.
