As with most golf swing techniques, there are people who benefit and there are people that this will not work out for. One of the great benefits to this is it takes focus away from the club head, it makes you focus more on hands and arms which can develop very, very good and sound swing from the metal. The only problem is when you take your thoughts away from the club head you are not focused on what you are doing at the point of impact. You are not focused on what you are doing with strike. So people who are focused on swing the handle technique will generally have good techniques with nice and smooth swings and nice and smooth techniques. But as it comes down to the point of impact, some people do struggle with the consistency of strike.
That is because as you’re moving through the ball, you want that club to be descending especially with the irons. You want that club to be moving downwards through the point of impact, hitting the ball first and then hitting the turf. Now to get a good understanding of that it is very easy, it’s much easier to that having more of a focus on the club head, having more of a focus on leaning that shaft down and ahead of the ball, striking the ball first and then the turf. When you’re using the swing the handle technique you’re not thinking about this section of the club. You are just thinking about the hands and the arms without rotation away and that rotation through.
And if you naturally struggle to have a descending angle of attack especially with the irons then how are you going to be able to adapt to different lies and to different situations? So if you are someone who doesn’t have an issue striking down on the ball and making a clean contact once they clear their mind then swing the handle technique can certainly help and can certainly work. However if you are struggling with ball striking, the ball first and then the turf, then this might not be the technique for you. But please give it a go and make your mind up for yourself.
