While trying to learn a very late release golf swing, it’s very important that you have drills and shots that you can call upon which really encourage those types of feelings. Now, a very high spinning chip and a very high spinning pitch shot can help you get those feelings. Now, this is the type of shot if you can imagine it within your mind that starts off nice and low with a high amount of back spin that you can see penetrating through the air, stopping on the green bouncing, grabbing and even having that little bit of backspin. And it’s in a combination that you can use with a drill which we previously mentioned about relaxing the right hand down through the point of impact.

So very, very simply you want to be getting settled to this ball positioning it just slightly back off center putting it a little bit away on the front foot and then picking at the target down at the range. Now, as you take this back you want to be increasing the amount of wrist hinge that you have in the backswing. So you want a nice full hinge of the wrist at this point in the swing. If you are only hitting a 50, 60 yards this probably about as far as you will need to go. So it’s taking the club up to this point. Now from here its getting the feeling that that right hand is relaxing down and then that the hands at the point of impact are getting a long, long way ahead of the ball. So it’s that setup, that hinge, that right hand relaxing down and then turning the body through and making sure that those hands are long way ahead of the ball at impact. Now this is going to increase angular attack downwards, because you have a loft on the wedge, it will impact backspin. And if you get this all right it starts off very, very low and then it has a lot of backspins, but it will really give you the sensation of what a late release feels like. So it’s getting set up, hinge, relaxing down and then returning those hands a long, long way ahead of the ball. Ball comes out very, very low grabs pitches and then grabs around that second bounce. If you can get used to that feeling, if you can really start to exaggerate that feeling with this pitch shot you will get the feeling of what a late release golf swing will feel like.
