Should You Use Early Or Late Wrist Hinge In A Golf Swing (Video) - by Pete Styles

So if we’ve established now that a golfer is going to use their wrist hinge, it’s important to also establish when they are going to use their wrist hinge and at which point of their swing and particularly for different types of swing plane. So generally classified you could have an early or a late wrist set. So the wrist set is going to be trying to lift the golf club up to around about a 90 degree angle. Now we could choose to do that very early on in the backswing that would be an early wrist set; we could choose to do that later on in the wrist set almost at the top. Or we could choose to do it somewhere in between the early and the late positions. Now it can also be affected by your swing plane, we got a two plane swing or a one plane swing, and generally classified as a two plane golf swing, golfers are going to start using their hands a little bit earlier in their swing, they are going to make their first motion of taking the club straight back, then they are going to start to set the wrist up to create a steeper backswing plane. So it isn’t a wrist hinge off the ball really, it’s a turn of the shoulders, then the wrist start to lift up more as we get through to sort of hip level, start to pick up the club up with the wrist set. So a two plane golfer, big muscles, then the hands start to work upwards.

Now a golfer who is a one plane golf swing actually has a very different motion in the first part of the backswing and a different motion with the wrist set, a one plane golfer, generally considers some of the swings around the body more and into a one plane motion here with a backswing and a downswing are the same, their wrist are going to work in a slightly different fashion because the takeaway is going to be controlled by a big shoulder turn and allowing the hands to come in flatter. So it would appear that the hands have done a lot of work into this phase, but they haven’t yet started to hinge, they have just turned the club back into this way then they will start hinge here and come down on a flatter and more inside approach on a one plane swing. So a two plane golfer is straight back and the wrist will work in a more of an upwards fashion, a one plane golfer, big muscles bring the club inside, then the hands start to work in a flatter position to then come down one plane. So utilizing the correct wrist hinge and wrist set can actually depend on whether you are a one-plane golfer or a two-plane golfer and how that can affect whether you use you hands earlier or later in your backswing.
