For a golfer to shift their body weight correctly in a golf swing is a really intrinsic part of not only hitting the golf ball straight but hitting the ball long way and hitting the ball with the consistent strike as well. So we got to move the weight in two different directions in the golf swing. First from a set up position where the body weight is 50/50 we'd like the body weight to move to the right side in the back swing but then release to the left side in the follow through for the right handed golfer. Now a couple of simple exercises that can help you understand how important that is, if I stand this way round. Then I have a golf ball in my right hand and I try and throw the golf ball towards the camera but without turning my shoulders or without initiating any weight shift, it's just going to be a hands and all action which really doesn’t produce much power or much flight to the golf ball.

If I was to turn my shoulders it would go further and if I was too turn my shoulders and use some weight shift it would go an awful a lot further. So standing this way round just the hand and the arm it comes out more like an under hand thought action and it doesn’t go very far. But if I was to turn my body weight and turn through the ball goes at least double the distance, it goes a lot further and my body weight starts to turn through the shot. So I can appreciate how during the golf swing the weight shift is going to help me. Now initially during the back swing we want to make sure that the weight shift works in the take weight to move to the right side correctly. So if I swing the club back with my hands and arms, the body weight starts to move very slightly into my right side but it doesn’t feel like I've generated much power yet. If I move my hands and arms and my shoulders across to my right side now I'm starting to settle a bit more into my right leg and as I turn to the top I wind up even more, now this position at the top of the back swing all the pressure goes into that right side, loaded up driving in a dynamic fashion into the down swing and the right hill pops up into the follow through and I've released the power in the body weight. So it's a weight shift going back to load up and a release coming through is going to be a nice efficient weight shift to generate maximum power for accurate straight golf shots.
