Here’s a really nice exercise just to see whether you’re on the right swing plane. I’m going to place the golf ball and then look at it from down the line here so you can see the side on-view. I’m then going to grip the golf club right the way down below the butt of the club, almost so that the handle just touches my belly button here. Then as I swing the club back, we’re going to try and hinge my wrist and cock the golf club so that the shaft of the golf club and the butt end particularly points down towards the golf ball. Now, if where the camera is is a mirror, you will be able to tool at that and you will be able to see whether your golf club is too steep on the swing plane, the club is too vertical, the shaft points down towards my toes or too flat, pointing too much horizontal, pointing across.
So if I can get this club to point down at the golf ball, it’s far easier for me from here to then release the golf club down the swing plane line to the ball. If I was very flat on the swing plane, I would then release my club and I would be off-plane or have to make a re-routing and correction. Likewise, too steep, I can’t release down and hit the ball. I would have to make a shallowing angle to get the club on plane. If I now make my normal set-up, I make my normal swing, the butt end still points at the golf ball and it’s still nicely on plane but gripping down below the butt end – sorry, below the handle here, so the butt end points towards my belt, I can make a nice easy correction and when I look back into the mirror where the camera is and see whether I’m on plane or not.
Practice that little exercise to get your club more on plane and your back swing.
