1. Seven Canyons Club Course Review
Since its initial opening back in 2002, the Seven Canyons Club Golf has received recognition and acclaim from Americas most prestigious golf magazines and publications. And thats quite understandable, since the golf course was designed by the former PGA legend and famous golf-architect Tom Weiskopf, who created an awesome layout set in the beating heart of Sedona, a golf course surrounded by ancient ponderosa pines and towering red-rock formations. The golf course features numerous elevation changes and a classic bunkering, being everything about golf in its purest form, which doesnt exclude pure enjoyment. Also, the course is every bit as beautiful and its challenging, making for one of Americas most revered naturally breathtaking courses. Keep in mind that Sedona is a private golf resort, available for its members and their guest only and its regarded by New Agers and native Americans alike as sacred ground, together with being one of the best works of Tom Weiskopf and among the South Wests most epic courses.
2. Shadow Creek Club Course Review
Tom Fazio worked closely with the owner Steve Wynn, and they both managed to dug a premiere golf course into the desert bed, manufacturing a golf-ecosystem of sorts basically out of nothing, by creating canyons, hills, streams and lakes, planting exotic trees, plants and flowers (over 21,000 of them). They even imported swans, wild turkeys and wallabies, ending up with a price tag of 40 million dollars for their endeavor. The Shadow Creek Club first opened for players in 1989 and it was the hype of the day, that kind of real-estate development even Donald Trump would envy, boasting an inspired design and layout together with some may call the greatest fabrication in golf. But we must give Tom Fazio the credit for composing a perfectly paced golf course, a beautiful routing, perfectly complemented holes and a nothing short of dramatic finish on a virtually empty canvas. To understand what I am talking about, the golf course at Shadow Creek Club must be played, enjoyed, shared and then played again and again. And if youre a true golf aficionado, youll understand and appreciate this courses breathtaking beauty.
3. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club Course Review
The undulating terrain upon which the Shinnecock Hills was built has relatively narrow fairways and impassable rough, slick and fast putting surfaces and due to the area's geography, a lot of potential for windy weather. As per accolades, the Shinnecock Hills golf course was ranked 3rd on Golf Digest's 2013-2014 Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in the United States of America and number one in its home state, New York. Also, it's worth noticing that the golf course at Shinnecock Hills hosted the US Open 4 times and it will do it again in 2018 for the fifth time. The signature hole at Shinnecock Hills is definitely the famous Redan, which is nothing short of iconic for golf course architecture aficionados. Also, the clubhouse at Shinnecock Hills makes for an outstanding display of golf history and architecture. In terms of playing the Shinnecock Hills, well, you'll be in for a real treat, as the golf course makes for one of the purest golf experience you'll have in your life time, being one of the most historic golfing facilities in America , as it flows over the natural undulating terrain boasting its links layout covered in fescue grass, with just one water hazard.
4. Sedgefield Country Club Course Review
The practice facilities are not the most immaculate you will ever come across, which is the only downfall to this club. The driving range is quite small, and can only hold about 30 golfers, which is not the most adequate on a busy summer day. The putting green and short game area, on the other hand, are outstanding. The chipping green has two big bunkers, and allows golfers to work on a number of shots from 30 yards and in, while the putting green is a monster and can hold at least 40 golfers at one time. The golf course is second to none, and the reason that the Wyndham Championship calls this club home. A beautiful Donald Ross masterpiece, leaves this club as the ONLY Donald Ross course on the PGA tour.
5. Shoal Creek Golf Club Course Review
Today, the Shoal Creek Golf Club is still one of the US's best golfing resorts. What makes this golf course really unique is the terrain upon which it was built, i.e. 1550 acres of densely wooded property, located between Double Oak and Oak, in the south of the majestic Appalachian mountains. The land is absolutely outstanding for golf, making for the ideal location if it ever was one, and there was enough space to build not one but two golf courses, yet Nicklaus said that he desires to make just one, but a superior one. And he delivered with flying colors, as usual, as every hole at the Shoal Creek Golf Club is unique and plays different, providing its members with a championship grade golf course which is also very fun to play. The Shoal Creek features 7154 yards of golf from its longest tees and it hosted 2 PGA Championships, in 1984 and 1990, together with the US Amateur in 1986 and the US Junior Amateur in 2008. In 2011, Shoal Creek was home for another major event, the Regions Tradition on the Champion Tour.
6. Shooting Star GC Course Review
The golf course is meticulously maintained all year round, being a strong contender as the best club in Wyoming, its home state, with wide fairways and impeccable greens, rough edge bunkers and fescue which add to the charm, not to mention the challenge of the Shooting Star GC Golf Course which tips out over 7500 yards. While the course itself is relatively flat, the terrain is basically surrounded by lush mountains, covered in trees, a feature which constantly reminds you that youre in the West baby, and the West is the best. Considering the Shooting Star GC Golf Courses elevation of approximately 6000 feet, the air is not that dense as it is at sea level, hence balls will carry significantly further than on a regular course. Long story short, this 7550 yards for a par 72 course designed by one of the best architects in golf is very easy to recommend and its worth playing if youre in the area.
7. Shooting Star Jackson Hole Golf Club Course Review
Tom Fazio was literally forced to design a golf course which can compete in terms of greatness with the majesty of its surroundings. And he did it with flying colors, creating a magnificent course which changes directions all the time, beginning basically side by side with the Teton Range then turning toward the mountain peaks, then away again. It is said that Tom Fazio, while visiting the area was asked about how many great holes a top-notch golf course must have. And he said without hesitation: eighteen, and each and every one must be memorable. This is the best definition by a long shot with regard to the Shooting Star Jackson Hole Golf Club.
8. Skokie Country Club Course Review
Tom Bendelow's design was impressively long for its time, boasting 6125 yards of golf from its longest tees and playing a rather weird 75 and a half par. World-famous architect Donald Ross was hired in 1915 to work his magic on the Skokie Country Club's golf course and he did it, obviously, creating a prairie styled golf course with awesome bunkers and greens. The new layout featured 6340 yards of golf, being longer than before, while the par was cut to 70. In 1938, the Skokie Country Club was redesigned again, tweaks and improvements were performed, leaving only six Ross-made holes in their original condition. However, the golf course can still be claimed as a Donald Ross design. To describe it in a few words, this baby is arguably the best one north-side of Chicago, being that kind of facility you never get tired of playing. The bunkering job is outstanding, with fast and large greens, featuring a mix of holes that will require you to go through all the clubs in your bag. The Skokie is fair yet challenging enough even for the scratch golfer, being a pleasure to play and always maintained in impeccable condition.
9. Sonoma Golf Club Course Review
The Sonoma course features 7100 yards of golf from its longest tees and its classic layout provides golfers with lots of strategic choices and various challenges, being built on 177 acres of pristine land, with undulating greens which are highlighted by majestic oak trees, lakes and the epic vistas of the Mayacamas Mountains together with neighboring vineyards. The long and short holes are excellently blended, making for a perfectly balanced golf course which has a perfect rhythm as you advance through the round, shot after shot. Truth be told, there are neither extremely difficult holes nor weak ones, and you'll definitely appreciate the symmetry and the economy of the Sonoma Golf Club's routing. The course has aged very well and it was recently the host of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2003 to 2009.
10. Southern Hills Country Club Course Review
These 2 golf courses are among the toughest to play in the lower 48 states. Perry Maxwell designed the main course at Southern Hills Country Club in a minimalist fashion, making for this golfing resort a true gem and a must-play in this life time, provided you manage to get an invitation. The championship course features 7131 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 70 par and it makes for a supreme challenge for the average Joe and golf pros alike, as it will require you to utilize all the clubs in your golf-bag. The design/layout is classic, featuring rolling hills and tree lined fairways, with a little creek meandering the property. There are also a few water-hazards coming into play on the back 9 but they present no significant problem. The course was ranked 30th by Golf Digest magazine in its 2013-2014 Top100 Greatest Golf Courses in America and first in its home state. Bottom line, the Southern Hills Country Club features a major championship layout, making for an awesome test of golf skill even for the golf-pros, boasting a no-nonsense design which is aimed at challenging the player and hasn't much to do with aesthetics and creativity, as everything is about golf in its purest form.
