Southern Hills Country Club Course Review
The Southern Hills Country Club was founded way back in 1936 and it makes for an old-school golfing resort, private and member owned, sitting on a beautiful piece of property in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Southern Hills Country Club is best known in the United States for its golf courses which are consistently ranked high, among the top one hundred best in the world and it hosted fifteen major championships in the last sixty years. The Southern Hills Country Club features 27 holes of golf, but the main attraction is the Championship Course, which was designed by the famous architect Perry Maxwell . This baby hosted seven major championships, including the 1946 USGA Women's Amateur or more recently, the 2009 USGA Amateur Championship. The West Nine is the second course at the Southern Hills Country Club, being built in 1992 and designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
Truth be told, these 2 golf courses are among the toughest to play in the lower 48 states. Perry Maxwell designed the main course at Southern Hills Country Club in a minimalist fashion, making for this golfing resort a true gem and a must-play in this life time, provided you manage to get an invitation. The championship course features 7131 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 70 par and it makes for a supreme challenge for the average Joe and golf pros alike, as it will require you to utilize all the clubs in your golf-bag. The design/layout is classic, featuring rolling hills and tree lined fairways, with a little creek meandering the property. There are also a few water-hazards coming into play on the back 9 but they present no significant problem. The course was ranked 30th by Golf Digest magazine in its 2013-2014 Top100 Greatest Golf Courses in America and first in its home state. Bottom line, the Southern Hills Country Club features a major championship layout, making for an awesome test of golf skill even for the golf-pros, boasting a no-nonsense design which is aimed at challenging the player and hasn't much to do with aesthetics and creativity, as everything is about golf in its purest form.
