When I'm looking to relax the arms, when I'm looking to relax the body unfortunately it doesn’t work on its own, it has one big trigger and that is the brain. So if you are in a state of confusion and anger, whatever it might be and your brain isn’t relaxed then it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to make your body relaxed as well.
Now pre-shot routine is key to this going through a very stable and a very simple pre-shot routine where you are picking out your target line, picking out into immediate target, visualizing that ball fly but the key to this and the link between what your head is doing, what your mind is doing and what your body is doing is how you operate your breathing.
It is something that a lot of golfers almost skip over because they think it’s a bit hippyish, but controlling your breathing is something that the current golfer number one in the world Jason Day does fantastically well. So before he hits a shot, he will stand, look down his target line, deal with blinky thing. They are also breathing very, very deeply…and then exhale and he is so obvious that you can’t miss the fact that he is doing it. Why he is doing that, he is taking in a deep breath and as he exhales he allows his body to relax and as his body relaxes, his mind relaxes, he gets more in the zone to actually hit the shot.
So standing behind, down the target, deep breath in, deep breath out, feeling the body relax down a little bit, he takes another couple of deep breaths when he is over the shot, one last one before he hits, his body is now relaxed and he can move that club through very, very quickly indeed because his body is in that relaxed position. So if you do want to build that bridge between having that relaxed mind and a relaxed body, use your breathing much more effectively, and you could see that happen very, very quickly.
