Now as a golf coach looking at a golfer who is requested a swing rebuild, it gives me almost a blank piece of paper if you like, to sort of start again with the golfer and that means nothing is off limits; we can change everything we wanted to change. Before I used an analogy at the start of this mini series of videos about a house, and rather than just decorating the house which might be a normal golf lesson, this time we’re going to knock the house down and redesign it. So we’ve got a blank piece of paper, we can draw any picture or any shape of house we want, and the same goes with the golf swing. So rather than just changing a little bit of the golf swing, if somebody comes to me and says, right Pete, I’ve taken some time off golf, I’ve got a full ability to do a swing rebuild with you, let’s say over the winter, let’s go to town on this. At that point, I can start looking through the of golfers swing and change whatever I like.
The first thing I’d be looking at changing and encouraging you to change is to make sure you’ve got your stance absolutely bang on. The stance like the foundations of a house are the groundwork for everything that’s stacked up and built above it. So we really want to make sure we’ve got the stance absolutely bang on, the right width, the right distance away from the ball, the right position of the feet, the right ball position as well – that stance needs to be absolutely perfect. As those the next thing I would look at which is going to be the grip. So any golfer that comes for a lesson and we change the grip will normally go away from that lesson feeling slightly uncomfortable and potentially playing a little bit worse than when they came in because the change to the grip takes a little bit of time to sink in. But in a full swing rebuild, time is something we do have, time is something we’re blessed with, so we can make the correct changes to the grip, make the grip absolutely perfect to go alongside the absolutely perfect stance. And that is some of the things that I would really start to work on with a golfer in this full swing rebuild position.
So, if you’ve gotten the time and the effort to go forward for a full swing rebuild, start with a stance then the grip. Then also consider how long you’ve got to make these changes stick. Now I would suggest minimum, minimum, minimum two weeks; ideally a month and ideally a season I would rather start these changes October, November, December ready for the spring then the summer coming. Don’t be making this full swing rebuild changing your grip, changing your stance, then expecting to blend the big monthly medal at the weekend, that’s not enough time. I would say a month or more is enough time to make these changes start to take benefits.
