As a golfer, we need to make really hard to make sure that we get a couple of key positions right within our golf swing. And one of those key positions that we really want to work on is going to be the impact position. So everything that goes before the impact position, yes, that’s important. But actually if we get down the impact and ruin it with a couple of key faults, then we’ve wasted all our effort that we’ve put in before. So in our address position, you’ll notice how the setup, the front arm for a right handed golfer my left arm is actually pretty straight. It’s almost – it’s not lopped out but it’s straight and it’s firm and it’s quite tense at that point. Then during the swing, the right arm will bend quite aggressively but the left arm maintains its straightness. And then as I come down towards impact, at the point of impact, both arms now straighten out. The left arm just goes back to its original position but the right arm is coming from bending to straightening and then carrying on and extending. And both arms stay relatively straight throughout the hitting area from impact through to a follow through. Then they bend but they bend much later on in the golf swing.
And I think for a lot of golfers, they don’t necessarily understand the role and the importance of these straight arm at impact. And if you’ve got any sort of bending of the arm at impact, you can be losing a degree of power and a degree of consistency. There are a few golfers that make the bending left arm work for them. Lee Westwood and Jordan Spieth being the examples there who are currently playing great golf with a bending left elbow. But that isn’t something we should aim for. They’re more the exception rather than the norm and it’s definitely not something I would encourage the club or handicap golfer to try and do is to try and bend the arms is going to be a problem. We want to try and work on extended arms and good extension through the golf ball. And hopefully, this next little mini-series of videos is really going to help you understand why that’s important and how you can bring that feature into your game.
