Jack Nicklaus Hunched Shoulders To Extended During The Golf Swing (Video) - by Peter Finch

Something which Nicklaus did during his setup is have very hunched shoulders when he was over the ball. So he was getting setup. He had a little bit of sit down in his posture. He had that big tilt of the spine away that tilted the head and the shoulders were also still a little bit hunched over at the point of address. Now if you're coaching a new golfer, and this is not something that you would automatically recommend. And it is something that you need to be a little bit wary of when you're trying to copy a top professional’s technique. Because what Nicklaus did although his shoulders were a little bit hunched over the ball to address, as he moved during the back swing turning around that spine angle and that shoulder cleared underneath his chin with the head tilted away.

Those shoulders extended outwards and turned into a very powerful position. So although it address he had that kind of slight hunching in his shoulders. As he moved up towards the top of the swing his head tilted, his spine tilted. Those shoulders stopped being so hunched and really extended outwards until his chest was lovely and flat at the top of the backswing. Now as you move into that position and that turn is really, really big that's when he started to use those ground forces moving down into the point of impact. So although those shoulders had that little bit of hunched address, by the top of the backswing as he moved upwards that hunch wasn’t still visible. He wasn't still cramped up into that position. It is something that you can look at in a player’s setup and go okay, maybe I should copy that. But it won't get you anywhere unless you understand that he went from one position and transformed it into another position. It’s much simpler to have those shoulders nice and square, nice and flat, and just turn upwards. But Nicklaus over many years of practice found that he could do that without a problem, that he could transfer from one position to another and obviously play fantastically successful golf. So the thing to take from this is if you are in this position and you turn back it is perfectly possible to get those shoulders nice and strong at the top of the swing. But it would be unwise to try and make that movement if you don't already do it naturally. That is something that Nicklaus did on his own accord without much conscious thought. So it's not something the you should try and build in if you don't have to.
