Should I try to feel where my club head is during my golf swing? Now feel in the hands and feel of the club head throughout the golf swing is very important because it allows you to make adjustments in the swing and actually move the club in different ways if you want to. Now, the best way to actually increase the feel of the club head throughout the swing is to focus on your grip. If you hold the club very, very tightly, it becomes very hard to actually feel where the club head is. If you grip the club nice and lightly, it will give you a greater appreciation of the club head weight and where it actually is throughout the swing.
Now this becomes very important not only for hitting straights shots, but if you’re trying to hit slightly different shots of draws and of fades, you need to feel where the club head is so you can either open or slightly close the face as you come through impact. Also, if you have a better feeling of club head throughout the swing you’ll automatically be able to make adjustments. If you are coming into impact and you’re in a slightly strange position, so you’re coming slightly from out to in, your brain will automatically try and square the club face as best as it can.
If you’re gripping on very, very tightly and there’s tension in the hands that you can’t feel the club head, you wouldn’t be able to do this effectively; so try and grip the club nice and lightly. Probably the easiest way of actually thinking about this, if you imagine a scale of one to 10, one being the lightest 10 being the hardest, you can actually grip the club, try and hold it about a three or a four and just take some practice swings just trying to feel the weight of the club, just trying to feel the weight of the club with a few waggles as you actually go back.
Now what you can do to also practice try and feel the weight of the club and try and feel it moving slightly on an inside path like this. And if you could feel where the club head is, this is the beginnings of hitting a little bit of a draw. If you want to hit that bit of a fade try and feel the club head as it moves down on the outside. But all these can be achieved as long as you keep your grip pressure nice and light. And if you can feel where the club head is throughout the swing, you’ll be able to have more control over the ball flight at impact.
