What should I think about during my golf swing? Now this is something a lot of people do get confused with if you’re having lessons or you’re thinking about a certain swing technique, you can take a lot of thought out with you onto the golf course. You could be stood over that ball thinking about a movement you want to achieve in your back swing and you could be thinking a movement you want to achieve during your down swing as well. Now on a perfect scenario, you should be going out and hitting balls on the course without any swing thoughts at all. Your only focus should be on the target. A lot of people when they go out they can’t even fathom and they can’t even imagine a time that they’re actually playing when they’re not thinking about a certain swing thought.

What I would recommend is just have one round or just a couple of rounds maybe not in a competition but just with friends when you’re relaxing, just to have no swing thoughts at all. Just focus on the target pick where you want to hit it, just stand up to that ball and just let your natural swing flow. And a lot of people are quite surprised with how well they strike the ball, when their mind is totally freed up from technical thoughts and aspects of the swing. If you can’t quite cope with that, keep your swing thoughts to a one just the one that’s the only thing that you should be thinking about. If you do hit a bad shot then don’t add another one in there. One of the biggest mistakes people can make is to try and control their swing too much. Thinking about a couple of swing thoughts in a back swing a couple of swing thoughts in the down swing, and totally forgetting what they’re there to do which is hit the ball to a target and the target is what you should be focusing on more than anything else. Remember golf is a target driven sport. You shouldn’t be thinking about your technique while trying to hit it to a target. Now you imagine a baseball player or a basketball player on a free throw line they’re not imagining they’re angles of their arms or how the club or the bat moves around their body, they’re simply focused on either hitting that baseball or shooting that ball into the hoop, their practice and their preparation, that is when they think about their technique and that is what you should do as well. If you’re working on a swing technique use it in practice and then trust it when you play and just focus on target and you could be quite surprised with the results you can achieve.
