First of all, let’s have a look at the advantages of what keeping the head very still and having minimal head movement will be, just to appease the people who are looking, they are screaming at the screen, saying that the head should stay absolutely perfectly still throughout the golf swing. Now for example, if you have to look at a player who is very, very technically proficient. Let’s say Louis Oosthuizen, for example. His head stays very still throughout his whole technique, but it’s not his head position that you should be looking at. You see spine position.

What basically happens when you keep your head very, very still, your spine angle remains constant throughout the golf swing. Now that’s a big advantage because if you have a constant spine angle, that gives you something to turn around. So what I mean by that, is if you’re getting into a very good posture position, with your back nice and straight and tilted over the ball, if you keep your head nice and still, what will happen is that your spine angle will remain in the same position and then you can turn your left shoulder underneath your chin, turn the right shoulder underneath the chin coming through, and the head position will remain the same, but more importantly, the spine angle has remained constant. If the head was to lift and to dip, the spine angle would change in its overall position and that would lead to inconsistencies within the plane, and it will lead to corrections having to be made with the hands and with the arms. So it’s not so much that you’re looking and that you’re really focusing on what the head is doing. It’s what the rest of the body is doing. The head will give clues as to what is happening with the rest of the body, rather than keeping the head still, to keep certain parts of the body in the position that you want. So if you are looking to have a swing with minimal head movement, just understand, that really what you’re looking at, is having more of a constant spine angle to turn around. And don’t just focus on keeping your head in one locked position. Because that can really start to stiffen up the golfer and really start to inhibit successful golf swings.
