Okay, so the question is, should I clean the club before each shot? Well, why wouldn’t you? Just imagine you just played the golf shots, it got a bit heavy, it got a big blob and mud on it, would you leave the club face like that? No, of course you wouldn’t because that’s too obvious because what would happen is that blob of mud on your club face now is acting as a cushion, so if you were to hit the next shot and not take that mud off, you could have the best swing in the world but so all of a sudden, the ball isn’t coming off the face because the blob and mud is there.
So let’s take away that big blob of mud. You’ve just played a golf shot, we’ve got these groves on the club; not very pretty but they are there to do a job because those groves are going to help to impart, spin a distance and trajectory. That’s what they are there for. So if they are blocked, it’s a bit like playing a golf shot with a club face with no groves in which case what will tend to happen, is the ball would tend to slide off the club face.
So straight away you’re thinking, I’ve got no accuracy. You’re right. You’ve got no control in the trajectory. I need to get the ball up. Well you’ve got no control now. And distance, well, no distance at all because the ball when you hit it out to the club face the skin sinks into the groves and it basically spins the ball out to whatever angle depending on certain factors in the set up. So what you must do is very simply, in your pocket you might have what we call a grove cleaner; just a little device. They have like bristles and they have like metal bristles for different clubs. And when you play the golf shot, just get it out, just clean it there onto your – on your club face. If you haven’t got one just go into the Pro shop, they’ll let you two or three dollars, two or three pounds and just clean it and get a towel and just wipe it. Remember, the only contact between you and that ball is the club face and the groves. So make sure when you’re on the golf course, we keep this in pristine condition and give yourself the best opportunity to produce that golf shot that you’re trying to play.
