Right now, we're going to talk about playing an effective punch shots. And really punch shot is a punch shot, and what we're going to do here is just show you the technique. Its not difficult. This is where we want to play a shot ideally, where we got a – we got the wind maybe coming across the fairway or the wind against so hitting a ball up here would get drifted maybe into the roof or pulled back. So we need to punch that shot, where maybe you got trees overhanging and we need to really, set up coming out sideways and having a big shot into the green, we could punch one underneath. So here we go, look at the lie, if the lie is good and we're talking about being on the fairway, look at what you face with distance wise and look at what's overhanging.
And select a golf club that you are comfortable with, that you think will go under those branches, before we have even changed the setup from what is normal. So I have got a 6-iron in my hands here. I am now going to set myself up, and I am going to put the ball, which would have been almost central. I am now going to put that ball between center and back, so the ball is a long, long way back in my center. It’s right back here, but remember it’s a punch shot, so we got to hit down on the shot.
And I have got to put my hands on, and I have got to put my, look how far my hands are forward, look at the angle between the head and my house. Look at the angle, it’s not here and it’s here because we got to hit the ball down. So now I am in this position here, I am going to put my weight on the left hand side 60-40 because that’s going to encourage a steep plane by chopping down a punch shot. My hand is forward will go up and down, a punch shot, so everything is saying punch. The ball position that will encourage this, so everything is staying right here we go. Now however we play shot, well from here, its all arms. I want you to play this shot and trust what I have given you, this information. When you swing the club there, please, please you don't need to pick that club up because if you do, all you are going to do is hit down and the ball is going to go up in the air because you're going to chop down on it.
We don't want you to do that yet so it's all arms. Remember the whole idea is to catch the ball first and to punch that shot. So you've got everything in place here, now if you just watch my arms from here, I've got the weight on the left hand side. You can see almost everything is leaning to the west of the left hand side. Now from here, just arms, and that ball, look at the follow through, how short the follow through is, sort the shortness. That's just a nice little push into about 150 there, just nice shot, swinging it, you know it's not very far but, I need to take the club half way back. The number one point was to get that ball back in play, get the ball up as far as I could do, good direction and it was no effort. There is no puffing and pansing over it, it's just such a simple golf shot, it's a safe golf shot.
And it's something I would encourage you to try and play more and more because I don't know many golf courses that I played on that doesn't have wind. So it is very, very windy or you have got the overhang of the trees, select a club. You've got the knowledge now. Go and play it, it’s simple.
