Stuart Appleby is one of those guys that seems to have been on tour as long as I can remember watching golf on the TV. Very solid player not particularly exciting in his mannerisms, not particularly exciting in the way he swings the golf club but really good solid fundamentals. And that’s led him to been a nine time winner on the PGA Tour. Now if look at how Appleby practices he is very diligent in the way he really focus on his set up positions like you say he has got a very sot of solid swing technique nothing particularly unique about his movements, but he still appreciates how the important basics and the fundamentals are the corner stone of enabling him to make that very smooth traditional golf swing.
So this is a great little exercise that Appleby uses a lot of other tall players’ use this drill and I think you could do the same thing as well. Just focus on your fundamentals in the first half of your practice session. So take one swing stick place it on the ground pointing in the direction where you want the ball to go and that would be your ball to target line or parallel to your ball to target line that is where your feet should be lined up. And this swing stick pointing at your golf ball. And this is pretty much a practice station that is a staple for most good golfers. One swing stick works on your alignment one swing stick works on your ball position.
Make sure you are always aiming at the target, make sure your ball position is always correct. Having the ball in the center of your stance for your short irons moving towards your left side for your longer irons and up into your left instep for you driver. And if you can work on that basic swing station there at the first half of your practice session just make sure your fundamentals are dead solid, then you can go ahead and work on building a nice consistent golf swing on top of that like Stuart Appleby.
In terms of his swing there is nothing really that I would ask you to avoid doing his swing is slightly short in the three O’clock position at the top which can aid a little bit more consistency maybe slightly less power but it certainly brings a bit consistence a bit more control. So in terms of his swing great golfer to watch great golfer to copy his career is fantastic he has had a really long consistent time at the top of the game and his swing looks like it would never break down too much on the pressure.
