The Back Leg Movement During The Golf Swing Takeaway (Video) - by Peter Finch

After you build this big solid foundation on which to build a swing using the back leg correctly during the backswing is going to be very, very important to how you can move the club throughout the whole technique. Now the back leg is something that a lot of golfers don't focus on. They focus more on hands and arms, and upper body, when it’s actually the back leg which they turn all of those things around. Now what I mean by that is after you’ve got yourself setup and after you start to move your body and you turn away from the ball that right leg and that right hip are very important, for not only controlling backswing length, for keeping the lower half nice and stable, but for actually allowing you to rotate at all. If that right leg was held in and the right hip was held in, and you try to turn fully without moving them at all, the likelihood is you are only going to be getting to about this point here.

Even though it looks like the top professionals are moving their lower half all, their hips are rotating. They are turning around their own axis. And using and focusing on that backleg can help you achieve that position. So when you're taking the club away, we’ve got the strong set up. We'll focus on keeping the right knee pointed straight forward. So it might feel like it’s almost kicked in slightly towards the ball. So kicking in very, very slightly and then on the way back focus on keeping the right knee in, but just allow that hip to rotate into turn as the body moves away as well. Now what this will do it will keep that lower half stable because the right knee hasn't moved. It would allow the hip to rotate which will allow the body to rotate on the way back. Those two things are essential to keeping stability and actually building of the power within the backswing as well. So it's getting setup and you can have a little rehearsal swing before you hit the shot. I certainly do recommend that, so taking it back, and feeling that right knee in and then you are just rotating around that hip a little bit more. And that’s going to allow you to turn through and strike the ball yes with power, but built upon that solid foundation.
