So now we’re going to look at what is a rescue club. Now a rescue club is quite a broad piece of terminology. And it actually encompasses most things that I would class as hybrid and utility clubs. And actually rescue club is a trademark name from TaylorMade. But because they were the first people to really bring out these utility hybrid clubs they’ve almost stuck like the biro or the sellotape. It was like the trademark name that people actually used to call everything else within that same bracket. So really you need to be looking at hybrid utility clubs and rescue clubs all in the same area. Now these have kind of become very popular over the last 10, 15 years as golfers are looking for something to replace their long irons. So 3 and 4 or 5-iron become quite difficult to hit as the modern ball spins a bit less and golf club manufacturers make the loft on the golf club less as well. So a 3-iron now it goes a hell of a long way if you can hit it but for most golfers there’s not enough loft on the face, there’s not enough spin from the ball and the 3-iron becomes redundant in most people’s bags.

So we start to look at placing in hybrid or rescue clubs which are generally used to help the ball fly a little bit higher. The rescue club is going to have plenty of loft on the face, plenty of weight low and deep underneath the ball. So when we set the ball up we can play it from the middle of the stance if you want to hit down on it and gouge it out of a bad lie, we could play it slightly more forward off the fairway or actually if you want to hit a rescue club, hybrid club off a tee you can play it quite a long way towards your left side and really sweep up on it hitting it high. And that’s why the utility, the hybrid, the rescue club is a very versatile club. You actually see some people maybe even chipping with the rescue club from around the side of the greens. So if you’re struggling to hit long irons particularly when the lie isn’t very good, consider getting a rescue, a hybrid, or a utility club in your bag. And I think having that in your bag will actually take away the confusion and the problems of having long irons, and it will help rescue your game.
