The Mechanics Of An Arc Putting Stroke (Video) - by Pete Styles

If we now look at the golf fundamentals that go together to make an arc type of putting stroke, so not the straight back and straight through just locked up but more of an arcing stroke. The key areas that a golfer might want to achieve here, would be firstly standing a little bit further back away from the golf ball. If you like to stand quite a long way back from the ball, you might consider that handle is going to set a little bit lower and that would encourage a slightly more arcing type of stroke.

The second fundamental that works well with that, is letting the right shoulder just withdraw slightly during the actual stroke so the straight back and straight through will be nearer to the ball and the right shoulder is working more straight up in a rocking action. Here there is a little bit more of a rotational action with the shoulder so the club comes inside the line, square and then back inside the line, set it by that slightly different address position and be further away. One last consideration with the arcing stroke is allowing the club to release a little bit more. Now release doesn’t necessarily mean that we are going to be using lots of hand actions through here, it just means we are going to let the club continue and follow its natural arc back to the inside, rather than trying to hold it off the target. A golfer that’s used to a square, square straight up and down putting the stroke, would be inclined to see the club pointing at the target through here with someone that’s making a more arcing stroke would generally see the club come around and actually point left of target through this point here. So allowing the club to release back for the inside and on the inside line, that’s going to be fine that’s going to be okay. If that’s the arcing type of stroke that you want to make, letting the club just come to the inside like that, that’s going to be okay. So work on those principles and fundamentals and that should help your arc type of putting stroke.
