The Keys To A Light Golf Grip Pressure (Video) - by Peter Finch

One of the keys to a light grip pressure, grip pressure is something which is subjective. So if you had a sliding scale from one to ten on how hard and how lightly you could grip the club, someone’s strength or the grip in the club will be different than another person’s strength or grip in the club if they were holding on as tight as possible. So it’s different for different people, but it is possible to find your own key to unlock what the perfect grip pressure will be. A lot of it is making sure that the entire body is relaxed. You can tend to see players who grip the club very, very tightly if they're nervous or they are desperate to have control over the club.

That tenseness will spread up from the hands to the rest of the body. So you can backward chain this and make the body relaxed, so the grip pressure will be relaxed as well. This starts with nice breathing. This starts with having nice deep breaths. It allows your brain to become relaxed and the body to respond and follow suit, hopefully so unless you are puffing in anger. But if you take nice deep breaths in, in through the nose and out through the mouth and just allow the body to relax as you do so. If you take a deep in breath to the chest and then allow that relaxation to spread throughout the hands and throughout the arms, this will give you a little bit more of an understanding of what you want to be feeling. Coupled into that, if you can use the same analogies of holding a live bird or a tube of toothpaste with the cap off that you don't want to squeeze anything out in the end of it, it can be very, very beneficial. So first step take in the correct grip that we’ve spoken about, deep breaths in and out, making sure the body's relaxing as you do so, really feeling all the tension leaving your arms and leaving your hands. You just want to be holding on with enough pressure. So if it’s a live bird, it doesn't fly away if you don’t hurt it. And then from there, just make sure you have that nice flowing swing. So that is a really simple method and a very simple key for you to use to try and find the ideal grip pressure.
