The advantages of hovering a golf driver can only really be ascertained by a golfer once they try the technique. Now hovering a driver just before the ball doesn’t automatically mean that you're going to hit very, very good shot. However, if you use it correctly and you use it successfully it can give big, big benefits. One of the benefits that it can certainly start to lead to is a much wider backswing. When you're getting settled with the club on the ground, some people want to try and get it up in the air and moving around the body as quickly as possible.

That makes sense because with the irons as the club is on the ground you want to be picking it up and then hitting down on the golf ball. If you manage with the driver to get into a position where it is picked up very, very steeply the width of the golf swing and the overall stretch out of the arms during the golf swing will be affected. If the hands and the arms are pulled in close to the body, width will be affected and you won't quite have the amount of power available that you would have with a wide golf swing. So getting yourself setup, having a slight hover of the club head before the ball will allow you to start stretching the arms out much further away from the golf ball. So, in that setup position rather than being picking up off the ground it's a matter of hovering and then stretching and moving away. At this halfway stage you want the club head to be pushed away. You want the arms to be extending away from the body. That amount of width in the backswing will allow you to build up a very wide swing arc. Wide swing arc allows you to have more consistency; but it allows you more time to build the club head speed throughout the downswing. So, yes hovering can be a very, very smart act just before you hit the shot, but it can free you so much more when you start that backswing and can help give you that extra width as you take it away.
