One of the biggest issues I see with someone’s putting stroke when they’re not putting well, when they’re inconsistent for speed, when they’re inconsistent for line, is the putting stroke you’ve dominated by hand action and it shouldn’t be. It should dominated by arms swing and shoulder tilt.

So if you feel like you’re hitting puts or maybe even you check by looking at yourself in the mirror. If you’re hitting puts with just this action or just this action, which is forearms and wrists or just wrists on their own and you should be tilting your shoulders more and rocking your arms more as one unit. If you feel you’ve got something going wrong here.

A nice exercise is to practice one handed but to stabilize your other arm. So we’re going to set you up here and actually hold on to your right arm with your left arm. Then this stroke will come from the right arm because the left arm is holding on, it will push and it will tilt your shoulders nicely.

So you want to feel like you’re making puts here with a shoulder tilt and not with an arm action that would feel very awkward. So everything together here working back, working through, feel like you’re tilting your shoulders and the club gets a nice even swing.

Likewise, if your left hand, you feel that’s the unstable one, grab hold of it with your right hand, hold the club nicely down towards the bottom and again, make a rocking action there. Feel like your hands are in most after the action completely and your shoulder is the thing controlling your stroke here. Nothing wobbling, nothing going too loose. Using a mirror or even video yourself to check that you’ve got control there. Your legs are solid and stable, your arms are solid and stable, and the control comes from tilting and rocking your shoulders. That translate down to a straight arm that’s braced with the other arm then you make your normal putting stroke again. Everything feels a lot more solid and a lot more stable because you practice with one hand and then you practice stabilizing that arm. That should get your shoulders working. Take your hand action after your putting and improve your skills on the golf course.
