Should I make a shorter swing with my golf driver to keep the ball in play? Now, if you are struggling for accuracy off the tee, what a lot of players tend to do is hit with the same club, just shorten the back swing. So, shorten the back swing so it's certainly almost a half swing, possibly three-quarter swing and then repeat the same position coming through the ball. Now, what this does it slows down the overall swing speed. It actually slows the overall swing, and the tempo, and the rhythm, and it shortens the amount of swing length. Now as a result, that ball will not fly as far or roll quite as far as a full blooded driver shot. Now what you have to bear in mind is that swing length, is that going to send the ball any further with the driver than it would if you had a full swing with a 3 putt. What you have to bear in mind if you have a little short swing with the driver on the tee, you could effectively be hitting a 3 Wood, or a hybrid actually past the driver if you have a little bit more confidence with those clubs.
So, when you’re on the tee by all means use a shorter swing with the driver to keep that ball in play, but bear in mind you could have other clubs in the bag which you can make a full confident swing with which will actually hit the ball further than your driver. The driver is your power club. It is the club which should hit the ball the furthest. If you are struggling with accuracy off the tee, don’t try and shorten, don’t try and control, work on your technique to try and get the most out of that club. It’s often the case that people struggling will shorten their swing with the driver. But use a club which you’re confident with, have a full swing it will go further. And in the meantime get a diver you like, practice with it at the driving range, and try to enable yourself to have a full swing when you get out onto the course.
