Now, the releasing of the golf clubs through the impact area is one of the most important parts of the swing. You can have everything nicely working in unison up until the impact area, but if you don’t actually finish this key part off, the bit where you actually hit the golf ball, then all of your hard work would be undone, so releasing the golf club through to impact is the key area of hitting the ball nice and straight with plenty of power.

Now, releasing the club through here dose not actually mean letting it go, but actually you could use the analogy of the feeling of letting the golf club go to encourage the right hand to release properly for the right-handed golfer. So if I turn to face the camera this way, I almost want to feel like I’m going to swing the club back and throw the club through the camera lens there. And if I was to achieve that motion correctly, my right hand is rolled on top of my left, my left hand starts to roll underneath and the club face starts to come from an open square and now a closed position through the impact area.

If I was to not release the club, it almost feels like I’m going to throw it slightly more to the right of my target line. So, allowing the feeling of throwing the club down the target line is quite a good analogy. Now, obviously, I wouldn’t advocate actually taking a golf club out and throwing it, but it’s that feeling. So, if you’ve got an old shaft line around the house and you wanted to sort of take that into the back garden or to the driving range or practice ground and feel like you’re throwing the shaft down the target line that can work for you. But if you’ve got experience of playing any other sports, maybe a sort of pin bowling action or even a table tennis or, sorry, tennis, forehand action, particularly a forehand top spins, it’s the same sort of feeling of the right hand turning over through the impact area which, in golf, actually generates quite a lot of club head speed. There’s quite a good whip through this area as opposed to not releasing, which is going to be much slower. So, a good release equals plenty of power and nice, straight golf shots.
