Lydia Ko is currently ranked number one in the ladies game. At only 17, she is the youngest player of either gender to hold that accolade. A rookie 2014 she has already amassed over two and a half million dollars in prize money, with six career victories, truly an outstanding talent, with some slightly idiosyncratic things happening within her swing. Now like a lot of young professional lady golfers, she is very, very flexible and very, very strong. And she has a very unique movement in the backswing, which allows her to be consistent, incredibly consistent.
Now in the backswing, what Lydia Ko does, is take the club away nice and wide as kind of get into this point as most professional people do. But from here, the backswing takes a very, very upright turn. So rather than continue into hinge and turn around the body, Lydia Ko’s swing goes up with the shaft and then continues up in this direction. Now from there, she has two options, she can either come down on the same path and hit a little bit of a fade, or what she tends to do, is have a little bit of a redirection, come down on the inside, and it’s a straight to a draw shot. But what’s fantastically consistent about the swing, is she does this movement every single time she hits the ball.
So she has a consistent result, when she hits the ball away. Now to repeat this, is very, very simple, is take the club away, hinge it upwards as upright as you can, and either swing straight down for a fade or loop it down on the inside for a little bit of a draw. And if you get all those factors working together, you could incorporate some factors of Lydia Ko’s swing. A truly phenomenal player right now and God know where she could be in a few years.
