It’s very rarely that we don’t get to see a golfer fulfill that potential over the course of their life. Most golfers started the tour maybe when they are 20 years old, they play right the way through to senior level and maybe even often to their ‘50s and ‘60s as they join the Champions Tour or the Seniors Tour. But one lady that we never really saw her potential and we haven’t yet seen her potential was Lorena Ochoa, a Mexican lady who is world number one and actually we tied from the game the 29 years old as she was world number one.
She made a personal decision to start a family and no one can fault her for that. But we never really saw her potential, she was winning things left, right and center world number one, knocked Annika Sorenstam off that position and looked like she could have been there for a good few years but we never really saw that potential. She may she comes back into the game after having her family get back to that position and so it would be interesting to see whether she does. She had a few little quirks in her golf swing though, and one of those quirks is interesting she actually talked about how she had a problem in her swing because of a driver she used when she was little girl. So she started off using a golf club that is now deemed to be too heavy for her. She talked about how she picked up on this club it was too heavy and actually pulled her out of position during her swing.
So I want to talk to you now about how if you’ve got youngsters are playing the game juniors, your own kids that you want to get into the game of golf, let’s make sure you give them the right equipment, there is no excuses now you can get a decent say a junior golf clubs, graphite shaft, short shaft, small grips and lie heads are perfectly suitable and won’t cause them long term problems in their swing. So during the set up phase we want to get a nice strong position at the top of the swing is Lorena, tough to get it to here that was all looking good but then the weight of the golf club caused it to actually fall back during the down swing, she pulled back into this position here, and had a massive backwards head dip that she blamed on the length and the weight of her driver at the time as a junior pulled her out of position that a long way back and then struggled to actually get through the golf ball from that position.
So not the prettiest or best looking golf swing in the world. So if you’ve got juniors that you’re trying to get into the game, I would consider that you go and consult your local PJ professional or decent retailer, make sure they get golf clubs that are the right length, right weight, right grip thickness and the right size, that would allow them to produce a nice good smooth golf swing developing nicely and wouldn’t have this issue where the equipment actually causes them long term problems in their swing.
