So now let’s look at some of the key moves that we would associate with a compact golf swing, a golf swing that looks like Nick Faldo when he was playing his best golf. So when we’re setting up to the golf ball kind of a normal fairly traditional style of set up, but then the movement into the backswing would be very, very stable, we talk about being very stable, the head wouldn’t move much at all, the head stays vey still and quite importantly at the top of the swing we’re going to see this quite low right elbow, a lower right elbow here will be classed as a compact swing as opposed to most of the Jim Furyk up in the air kind of right elbow position. So a lower right elbow dropped in here creates this nice compact feeling. Looking at that from the front end we’re turning back not much head motion at all, quite a low stable right elbow avoiding this swing when it’s down in here.

Also noticing a compact golf swing we’d see that there is very little lateral movement, so it isn’t like there’s a big sway in the backswing, not like the there’s a lot of knees in the backswing at all. So a compact swing will generally look quite stable in the lower half, very stable with the head, not a massive weight shift in that low right elbow. Basically a simple looking, less stuff to go wrong golf swing, turning that into the down swing again we´re going to see a quiet lower body so it’s not got loads of knees, and loads of legs, and loads of spinning action in that compact golf swing, compact swing, less moving parts, less stuff to go wrong, yes there’s a nice drive through the ball but it’s not got loads of different things moving. So if you can find yourself a video camera or a mirror you can start looking at yourself when you’re making these swings and see whether you’ve got the stable head, the quiet lower body, the turn rather than the slide in the backswing, quite importantly the nice load compact right elbow. And if you can tick all those boxes, you could start moving towards a more consistent compact golf swing.
