Now if you have played golf any length of time I am sure you will appreciate how much pressure and anxiety can actually cause problems to your golf game. Maybe you are a perfect golfer out on the practice ground than when get on the golf course, you struggle to repeat that same level of performance.

Now putting is a particular area of your golf that can be prone to the pressure because it requires such fine movements, such finesse and such control that when you get anxious or under pressure that is often one of the parts that will fall down in your game first. So here is a couple of tips that hopefully will encourage you to be better under pressure particularly with your putting.

Now one of the biggest things now just make sure you have got really good solid fundamentals and good technique. Wrist hinge in the putting stroke is one of the biggest things that would breakdown under pressure. So when you are practicing your putting stroke really solid, good solid shoulder movement, no hand action. If you have got hand action in your putting stroke that will be found wanting on the pressure. Another thing is the head movements, be careful that your head doesn’t come up too early to sort of anxiously watch whether the ball is gone in the hole under pressure particularly sort of 18th green need this putt to hole to win the match and the head comes open and it will miss to the right hand side, make sure everything stays really solid, really smooth down there with your stroke.

Another area is just really good solid quality of practice, don’t focus on too much of hitting driver, hitting driver, hitting driver then neglect the putting stroke. The more you can practice this and maybe practice in a pressurized situation, play little games with yourself. I have got a whole 5 of this 6 putter before I move on to the next part of my practice. Then when you get to the 4 and 5 putt you really start to feel a bit of pressure building like the real life on course situation.

The other things you got to consider is the actual putt that you are using, you have really got to invest the time and the effort to make sure that putter is right for you. People seem to have no problem with spending $200 or $300 or £200 or £300 on buying the latest fanciest driver. And then they use a £20 putter that they have had in the back of their garage for years. This is actually the club you will use most so let’s make sure that we get the right putter for you. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it has to be correct for you.

So the style of the back of the putter is it a bladder, is a mallet which one works best for you, but also consider the length of the putter, are you happy with a short putter, if you are really prone to struggling under pressure maybe a mid length or actually a long sort of broom handle style putter, very, very popular on the PGA Tour now and you are guys winning tournaments with these long putters. Now maybe that’s because under pressure they putt better rather than someone who has a little risky flaky dig but when they get anxious and under pressure they actually struggle.

If we check out Thomas golf’s range of putters they have got all the different styles in the back and all the different length of putters and they will custom fit a putter that suits your game. And hopefully with the right putter, the right preparation you will putt well even under the most intense pressure.
