Why do I miss my approach shot short and right of the green? The answer to this is because as you are hitting the shot you club face is open, your club face is aiming to the right of the target line, on the right of the target. And the effect of that is the, as the club face opens and aims more to the right it puts more loft on to the club, so you are going to hit the ball a lot higher than usual and because its aiming to the right the ball is going to fly to the right of the target. So you are going to hit a very high shot and the shot to the right so your approach shot is going to miss short because it is flying higher and it will miss the right because of where the club face is aiming.
So if we have a look at the red alignment pole representing the target line, the yellow pole is actually where the club face is aiming as you hit the ball. So rather than the club head swinging down the target line and the club face is aiming down the red line, as you are swinging in you might be swinging in down the target line but your club face is aiming down the yellow pole rather than down the red pole. So the club face is aim, open as you are striking the ball and as I said that’s going to make the ball pop up quite high and its also going to make it’s flight shorter than usual because it’s going up more.
So to correct it we just need to get used to, your swinging with the club face aiming down the target line a little bit more. So here is a great tip, practice drill to follow, why we do this, before you hit your golf balls, take an alignment pole if you don’t have one just use one of the other golf clubs and just place it in front of where you are going to hit the ball from so that it’s aiming at your target. So once you have got that in position there and you can see a target line, we need to get you set up and just make sure that your, initially as you set up, that the club face is aiming down that target line.
The ball will always fly off at a right angle to the club face so make sure its pointing correctly down the target line. Take your setup position to hit your approach shot and then just work on making some practice swings, so that as you are swinging very slowly you can see where the club face is aiming and if it’s aiming over to the right. What you will find is that you need to allow your arms and your hands just to rotate slightly as you swing through so just allow the right hand to turn over the left as you swing through. Once you are doing this and you are starting to see that your club face is aiming down the target line, then you can start to speed the swing up and reintroduce the ball. I would leave the pole or the club end and then you can just work on hitting shots straight down that line rather than to the right of it. And once you get the feel for doing that and you are doing that more successfully you should find that your shots are no longer finishing to the right of the target or short, they are now middle of the green with the correct length.
