Should I Ever Have a Short Finish? (Video) - by Dean Butler

Okay so the question is should I ever have a short finish, a finish as in the follow through and it should curtail a sort of follow through rather than sort of conventional one when we go up here. Well there are times and places on the golf course so you might say, “okay where?” Well the most obvious factor would be I am under the trees; I’ve got some overhanging branches and I need to keep that ball down so a shorter swing would happen there. And to have a shorter swing it’s very important that we move the ball position further back not forward. If the ball is forward in this stance we are always going to be hitting the ball through and up and the follow through will tend to be longer. If we tend to put the ball back in the stance then we tend to swing the club more up and then from here we hit down as more of a punch golf shot so keep that in the back of your mind.

Secondly, imagine we are hitting the ball into the wind. The last thing you want to do is hit that ball high up in the air so the easiest thing to do will be to put the ball a little bit back in your stance maybe take take an extra club so it should make more sense and then from there it’s the same set up. So there’s a pattern developing here, into the wind overhanging branches and really for control because a short follow through is a much more reliable sort of control swing than one that is flying away. If you think about – if you can control your distance, you are always going to be there or there about the target. Alright, direction is a different thing altogether but distance will never – if we’ve missed the greens to the right but the distance is good we’re there or there about. So there’s a lot of positive to take from here. So when you go through, when you set yourself up to get this follow through I want you to pull that ball position back and I want you to concentrate on keeping your hands forward so from here if I keep my hands forward and curtail a follow through. You can see what I’m doing here, I’m keeping my arms out nice and straight, I’m not thinking about a swing that’s going up here. So from here put the ball back it keeps it low that helps to curtail the follow through and from here all the energy is into the back of the ball and through here we want to finish where you are reaching out at the follow through. We don’t really want you to go beyond that point because here we are – we are trying to basically have the short finish to control that distance and control that shot into the wind and keeping that ball lower.
