If we look with some exercises now and some drills for creating a slightly longer backswing, if you feel that you struggle to hit the golf ball the required distance or sometimes you might feel like you’re snatching up a golf ball, having a golf swing that’s too short and too quick is often the cause of that. So let’s have a look of the ideal length.
We’d want the golf club to come up to around about two o’clock for your short irons and three o’clock with your driver. Now there maybe reasons why you can’t quite get up full swing. It might be age or flexibility or injuries that you have that stop you in getting to that full length and require you to have a shorter swing. But if you feel that you can get in to those positions correctly, you don’t have any physical impairments, when you can turn to the right position but you’re not actually achieving the right position during your real swing, we might ask the question, “Why aren’t you? Why aren’t you able to fully get to your potential backswing position?” Because the further back that you go, you will increase the distance you can hit the golf ball, you will increase the fluidity that you can hit the golf ball and you should still keep loads of consistency.
So is it a physical issue? Is it a technical issue? Or is it more of a mental issue that you rush down and try to hit the golf ball too quickly made with a bit of anxiety, a bit of nerves? So have a look at how long your backswing goes. And if you feel that it’s quite short and it’s only getting up to the twelve o’clock position and not quite around to the two or three o’clock position, hopefully the next section of drills will encourage you to make a bigger backswing turn.
